Fidias Panayiotou had no hesitation in displaying the luxury of €10,000 airline tickets and revealing that they had been given to him as a wedding present. What he did not disclose was the identity of the generous friend who paid for them.
A question of transparency
When an MEP and party leader accepts a gift of such value, the identity of the person who funded it becomes a legitimate matter of public interest, rather than mere personal curiosity.
That is particularly true for a politician who has made transparency one of his central promises. The public has seen the tickets. It has yet to learn who paid for them.
