Iran has called on Cyprus to ensure that foreign military bases located on the island are not used for operations against Tehran, according to Iran's state news agency IRNA.
The issue was raised during a telephone conversation on Thursday between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, as part of discussions on bilateral relations and developments in the Middle East.
According to reports, Araghchi asked the Republic of Cyprus not to allow foreign military installations on the island to be used as bases for hostile actions against Iran.
Cyprus reiterates international law position
Kombos reiterated Cyprus' commitment to the principles of the UN Charter and international law.
He also stated that Nicosia remains in contact with the United Kingdom and has received assurances that the British military bases in Cyprus will not be used for operations against any country, including Iran.
Frequent diplomatic contacts
A diplomatic source in Nicosia told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that communication between the two foreign ministers is frequent.
The source said Cyprus consistently conveys its positions regarding international law, the status of the bases and the Republic's exclusively humanitarian role during regional crises.
The source also noted that the United Kingdom's position has been stated publicly and remains unchanged.
Call for de-escalation
Cyprus stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy amid continuing regional tensions, underlining the need for de-escalation and peaceful engagement.
