Former MEP Demetris Papadakis, whose name had previously been linked to the case, gave his first public reaction on X after a criminal case was filed against journalist Makarios Drousiotis and a woman known as Sandy. The case was filed before a Nicosia court on Friday, with reports indicating the two face around 100 charges.
The case relates to claims and reports made public by Drousiotis last March, which led to a police investigation. Papadakis had been among those whose name was publicly linked to the case, before it emerged he had no involvement. The allegations led to his removal from the Alma Movement's ballot ahead of the 2026 parliamentary elections.
Commenting on the case's filing, Papadakis wrote that while Drousiotis had, "with the airs of a thousand cardinals," been tarnishing people's dignity and reputations, sending people to hospital with what Papadakis called his "fairy tales," it had all seemed acceptable at the time. In the same post, he said "the countdown for the bill begins," and questioned whether Drousiotis "would now, from the outset, also challenge the courts."
Papadakis's reference to people "sent to hospital" appears to allude to the impact the case had on individuals whose names became caught up in the public debate. Among them was Greek Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister Giorgos Mylonakis, whose name was also raised at the time in reports and posts, and who was hospitalised after suffering a stroke.
The case is now expected to proceed through the courts, following its filing before the court.
