Democratic Rally (DISY) President Annita Demetriou has signalled that the party's charter and established procedures will determine how it handles Averof Neophytou's bid for the Presidency of the Republic. Speaking to the media ahead of a meeting of the party leadership, she made her first public remarks since Mr Neophytou announced his candidacy.
Statement ahead of the leadership meeting
Asked about Mr Neophytou's candidacy, Ms Demetriou referred to a statement the party had issued the previous day.
"Our announcement yesterday says it all. It is his right to take whatever position he wishes. It is our right, and our obligation, to follow the charter and the procedures," she said.
Role as guardian of the party charter
The DISY president also made clear that, in her institutional capacity, she would act on the basis of the procedures laid down by the party.
"As president of the party and guardian of the charter, that is what I will do," she stated.
