Hybrid vehicles accounted for 52.4% of all passenger saloon car registrations in Cyprus during the first eight months of 2026, up sharply from 43.6% in the same period last year. The shift came as petrol and diesel models both lost ground, according to figures released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (CYSTAT) on Tuesday.
Saloon car fuel type shares (January–August 2026 vs 2025)
- Hybrid: 52.4%, up from 43.6%
- Petrol: 35.3%, down from 43.2%
- Diesel: 8%, down from 8.5%
- Electric: 4.3%, down from 4.8%
Overall registrations climb
Total motor vehicle registrations across all categories rose by 11.2% to 38,564 in January–August 2026, compared with 34,668 in the same period of 2025.
Passenger saloon car breakdown
- Total passenger saloon cars: 29,902, up 10.9% from 26,961
- New cars: 9,326 (31.2% of total)
- Used cars: 20,576 (68.8% of total)
- Rental cars: 3,468, down 14.2% from 4,044
Commercial and goods vehicles
Registrations of goods conveyance vehicles rose by 13.4% to 4,463, from 3,935 in the same period of 2025.
- Light goods vehicles: 3,535, up 12.2%
- Heavy goods vehicles: 536, up 17%
- Road tractors (trailer units): 167, up 21%
- Rental goods vehicles: 225, up 20.3%
Buses, motorbikes and mopeds
- Motor coaches and buses: 142, up from 101
- Motorbikes (over 50cc): 3,428, up 10.8% from 3,094
- Mopeds (under 50cc): 103, down from 155
