The Central Bank of Cyprus is calling on residents to take part in the European Central Bank's online survey on the next series of euro banknotes. The ECB has unveiled ten shortlisted design proposals, selected through an EU-wide competition that drew more than 1,200 applications from graphic designers, built around two themes: "European culture" and "Rivers and birds."
Under the culture theme, designs feature prominent European figures including Leonardo da Vinci, Ludwig van Beethoven, Maria Callas and Marie Curie. Under the nature theme, each denomination pairs a different European bird species and river landscape with one of the EU's institutions, among them the kingfisher alongside the European Commission, the white stork with the Court of Justice of the European Union, and the northern gannet with the European Court of Auditors.
People across Europe can view the proposals and share their views through the online survey, which will remain open until 21 September 2026. A separate survey using the same questions will be carried out in parallel by an independent research company among a representative sample of eurozone residents.
The ECB's governing council is expected to choose the final design toward the end of the year, taking into account the results of both surveys alongside the design jury's assessment and a technical evaluation. ECB President Christine Lagarde said euro banknotes are more than a means of payment, describing them as one of the most tangible expressions of Europe and saying the designs would reinforce a shared identity.
This marks the first complete redesign of euro banknotes since they entered circulation in 2002. The new notes are intended to incorporate improved security and accessibility features, while also aiming to reduce their environmental footprint. Banknotes from previous series will retain their value and continue to circulate alongside the new series once introduced.
The Central Bank of Cyprus is encouraging residents to take part and contribute their views to shaping the future appearance of the shared European currency.
