President Nikos Christodoulides will brief party leaders on preparations for the UN chief's visit, while Mike Spanos will represent Fidias Panayiotou's movement.

The National Council is due to meet at 10am on Friday under President Nikos Christodoulides for discussions and briefings ahead of the upcoming visit of UN Secretary-General António Guterres to Cyprus.

Christodoulides is expected to travel to Athens on Saturday for talks with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis ahead of Guterres' visit.

The President also indicated that he may meet European Commission special envoy Raffaele Fitto and could hold a separate meeting with the UN Secretary-General's personal envoy, María Ángela Holguín, before talks with Guterres.

Meanwhile, Holguín is expected in Ankara on Friday for discussions with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, focusing on recent diplomatic developments in the Cyprus issue and preparations for Guterres' visit between 27 and 29 July.

Separately, the Direct Democracy Movement announced that it will be represented at the National Council by Mike Spanos.

In a video message published on Thursday, movement leader Fidias Panayiotou said he does not consider himself sufficiently knowledgeable to advise the President on the Cyprus issue and had therefore decided to appoint a representative.

Panayiotou said Spanos is not a member of the movement but is someone whose advice he values on a range of issues.
