Hungary’s new Prime Minister Peter Magyar is visiting Brussels on Wednesday for his first trip since winning the election, seeking to open a new chapter in relations with the European Union following the departure of nationalist leader Viktor Orban.
Magyar’s victory ended Orban’s 16‑year hold on power. The new prime minister has pledged closer cooperation with Brussels in a bid to restore trust and unlock billions of euros in EU funds frozen over rule‑of‑law concerns.
“A strong mandate, a great responsibility,” Magyar wrote on social media as he departed Budapest, stressing the need to secure EU funding to which Hungarians are entitled.
Magyar is expected to hold talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa. He has also said he plans to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in June to open a “new chapter” in bilateral relations.
