The Department of Labour Inspection has issued a warning over the growing sale of scented candles and home fragrance products through social media platforms, citing potential risks to consumer health and safety.
In a statement, the department noted a sharp rise in amateur production of such products, which are increasingly marketed online via platforms such as Instagram and TikTok.
Health and safety concerns
Authorities expressed concern that many of these products are produced in environments lacking proper ventilation or safety conditions.
They often contain chemical mixtures, including essential oils, synthetic fragrances and solvents, which may pose risks to both human health and the environment.
The department stressed that labelling a product as “natural” does not guarantee its safety.
Ingredients used in scented candles and air fresheners may cause skin and eye irritation, respiratory issues and environmental harm.
Regulatory requirements
According to the department, the classification, labelling and packaging of such products are governed by the EU Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
Under this framework, manufacturers and importers are required to properly assess and classify hazards before placing products on the market, and to ensure appropriate packaging and labelling.
Labels must include mandatory information on potential risks, such as hazard pictograms, hazard statements and precautionary advice.
In addition, products classified as hazardous must have their composition notified to the European Poison Centres database and include a 16-digit Unique Formula Identifier (UFI) on their label.
Call for compliance
The department emphasised that increasing amateur production does not exempt individuals from legal obligations.
It underlined that responsible manufacturing, proper risk assessment and accurate labelling are essential for protecting public health, safety and the environment.
Consumers are advised to choose products with clear and complete labelling, read usage instructions carefully and avoid products of unknown origin.
