The areas of Geri and Dali have been placed under restriction zones of three and ten kilometres following confirmed cases of foot-and-mouth disease, according to the Veterinary Services of Cyprus.
Speaking to CNA, the department’s spokesperson Sotiria Georgiadou said there are currently no new cases, while authorities await further laboratory analyses to assess how the situation will evolve.
Containment measures
“The areas of Geri and Dali have been sealed off at three and ten kilometres with the assistance of the police. Disinfection spraying is underway, while sampling, contact tracing and vaccinations are ongoing,” she said.
Georgiadou called on the public to comply with the measures, remain calm and cooperate with authorities.
Vaccination progress
Vaccination coverage has reached 82.67% in cattle and 45.74% in sheep and goats across Cyprus.
Responding to questions, Georgiadou described the spread of the disease as concerning and stressed the need for strict adherence to all preventive measures.
She added that for the past three weeks the Veterinary Services have been urging that the outbreak be contained within Larnaca, with particular attention to movement restrictions.
“We are awaiting further laboratory analyses to determine how the situation will develop,” she said, reiterating the appeal for compliance, calm and cooperation.
