Another Thebes at Nicosia Municipal Theatre

Vangelis Theodoropoulos (Neos Kosmos Theatre) brings Sergio Blanco’s Another Thebes to Nicosia, with Thanos Lekkas and Dimitris Kapouranis leading a stark, finely paced production about male identity, patriarchy and violence, guilt and punishment, and the very act of making theatre. Originally slated for two shows, a third has been added due to demand.

Blanco’s meta-theatrical drama follows a writer who visits 21-year-old Martin in prison -convicted of killing his father- to craft a play from his story. When authorities block the inmate’s participation, an actor steps in, and a triangle forms that dives, unflinchingly, into truth, trauma and desire, with echoes of Oedipus and Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment.

Director’s note: “We are in the territory of male violence and patriarchy… Another Thebes wrestles with the complex father–son bond, class divides, mental illness, religion, guilt and eroticism,” says Theodoropoulos.

Critically acclaimed for its immersive atmosphere and performances, the production features Kapouranis -winner of the Dimitris Horn Award 2022-23 -opposite Lekkas.

Andama Festival - live folk, crafts & dance in Nicosia Municipal Garden

For a second year, the Nicosia International Festival hosts Andama Festival within its Parallel Programme—returning bigger and renewed to the Nicosia Municipal Garden for two days of live traditional music, crafts and participatory workshops.

Born from a youth collective, Andama is a celebration of Cypriot tradition, community and the arts, promoting Cyprus’s cultural heritage and wider Mediterranean influences. This year’s music line-up draws on folk idioms with contemporary flair, featuring Windcraft Band, Kanvinitisses, Nomades, the Larnaca Music School “Mikis Theodorakis”, Project Pithkiavli, Michalis Tterlikkas & “Mousa”, and Michalis & Petros Kouloumis with guests Fr. Tombazou, Chr. Isidorou and D. Pihas.

Beyond the stages, the garden turns into a living workshop: traditional trades and handicrafts on display, hands-on craft sessions open to all, plus free traditional dance workshops throughout the weekend.

Costas Joachim - new paintings at Gloria Gallery, Nicosia

The veteran Cypriot painter Costas Joachim unveils a new body of abstract work at Gloria Gallery, with the exhibition inaugurated by Nikos Tornaritis, Parliamentary Representative of DISY, on Monday 6 October 2025, 19:30. The show runs until 18 October 2025.

Born in Bellapais, Kyrenia (1936), Costas Joachim studied at Bath Academy of Art (Painting, Sculpture, Visual Perception; Art Education) and later earned degrees from the Athens School of Fine Arts (1975) and a postgraduate diploma in Painting, Aesthetics & Art History at Byam Shaw/Chelsea College of Art, London (1980). His early solo at the Hilton Nicosia (1968) led art critic Tónis Spiteris and artist Christoforos Savva to select works for the 34th Venice Biennale. He has exhibited across Europe and the US (Berlin, Munich, London, Paris, Hamburg, Montecatini, Athens; Los Angeles) and participated in the Florence Biennale (2009, 2015). From 2003–2009 he received the Presidential Award annually for contributions to Cypriot painting.

The new canvases extend Costas Joachim’s long dialogue with Cyprus’s cultural memory and the serene aura of Bellapais. As he notes, the works are the outcome of “systematic, persistent creation,” a concentrated chain of inspiration. Art historian Dr Eleni Nikita calls him “a leading figure of Cypriot abstraction,” while critics have praised the “world-unique” distinctiveness (Spiteris) and “a poetic charm” (Chrysanthos Christou).

Opening: Mon 6 Oct 2025, 19:30

Venue: Gloria Gallery, Nicosia

Dates: 6–18 Oct 2025

Quietly luminous and rigorously composed, Ioakeim’s latest paintings offer a measured, abstract meditation - an intimate “dialogue with the canvas” rooted in place, memory and form.
