Three Judokas Join the Olympic Scholarships for Athletes Program L.A. 2028

The judokas Sophia Asvesta, Georgios Balartzisvili, and Petros Christodoulides have been selected for the “Olympic Scholarships for Athletes Los Angeles 2028” program.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), following a proposal from the Cyprus Olympic Committee (COC), approved the inclusion of judokas Sophia Asvesta, Georgios Balartzisvili, and Petros Christodoulides in the “Olympic Scholarships for Athletes Los Angeles 2028” program.

Athlete Achievements

  • Sophia Asvesta: Achieved 9th place at the Paris Olympic Games, 5th place at the European Judo Championships (Croatia), and 1st place in the Asian Cup, confirming her status as one of the top athletes in her category.

  • Georgios Balartzisvili: Secured major international titles including 1st place at the Commonwealth Games (Birmingham 2022), 1st place at a World Cup event (Italy), and 1st place in the Asian Cup, marking him as one of the greatest talents in Cypriot judo.

  • Petros Christodoulides: Made history as the only Cypriot judoka to medal at a Grand Prix (bronze in Austria). He also achieved 1st place in the Asian Cup, 5th place at the Commonwealth Games (Birmingham 2022), and 5th place at the World University Games (Germany).

The COC expressed its pride in the inclusion of these three athletes in the IOC scholarship program, which will support their preparation on the road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

About the Program

The “Olympic Scholarships for Athletes” program is part of the athlete support initiatives funded by Olympic Solidarity of the IOC, aimed at providing optimal preparation for participation in the Olympic Games. A total of $320,000 in financial scholarships will be awarded to 24 Cypriot athletes.

These scholarships are in addition to:

  • Scholarships awarded through the cooperation between the Cyprus Olympic Committee and the A.G. Leventis Foundation.

  • Sponsorships received through partnerships with the Cyprus Olympic Committee’s proud collaborators.

  • Other programs supported by Olympic Solidarity.

The Cyprus Olympic Committee also thanked OPAP Cyprus (Diamond Partner) for its valuable and constructive collaboration.
