A fire that broke out on Monday afternoon, at an electronics store on Strovolos Avenue was brought under control at approximately 8:20pm, according to the latest update from Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis.
Firefighters remained at the scene, working to fully extinguish the blaze on the mezzanine level of the store, where flames were still active.
Kettis confirmed that checks were also carried out on the two upper floors of the building, which houses the offices of three private companies above the ground-floor retail space.
Evacuations
"The building was evacuated in time," Kettis stated in a social media post, adding that both the individuals inside the office spaces and a person who had been in the electronics store at the time of the fire were safely evacuated. While the office areas were not directly affected by flames, they did suffer smoke exposure.
The fire originated on the ground floor of the building, inside the electronics store. The Fire Service deployed six fire engines along with one telescopic aerial unit to tackle the blaze, which sent thick smoke billowing into the evening sky.
Earlier in the evening, Kettis had noted that all staff were believed to have exited the building safely, but a full search of the premises was to follow as a precaution.
