The Charge d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Cyprus, Zhou Yunliang, has expressed his country's readiness to further strengthen cooperation with Cyprus in areas such as trade, shipping, clean energy and the digital economy.

According to a press release, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Republic of Cyprus, in collaboration with the Strategy International organisation, organised on Friday an information event entitled “Understanding China Through the Two Sessions”, at the Embassy’s premises in Nicosia.

More than half a century of diplomatic relations

Keynote speaker at the event was the Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Cyprus, Zhou Yunliang, who presented the main aspects of the annual meeting of the National People’s Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, two leading institutions of China’s political life, through which the country’s strategic direction is shaped.

Referring to the relations between China and Cyprus he noted that 2026 marks the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, as well as five years since the upgrading of relations to a strategic partnership.

In this context, he expressed China’s readiness to further strengthen cooperation with Cyprus in areas such as trade, shipping, clean energy and the digital economy, the press release says.

Strengthening cooperation

During his speech, he analyzed three basic "codes" which, as he noted, characterize China's governance. The first, he said, concerns the institutional nature of governance, the second is  related to China's development model, which seeks to combine economic growth with quality and innovation and the third concerns China's diplomatic policy, which is based on peaceful development, multilateral cooperation and the promotion of a more equitable international system.

He stressed that China supports peace, multilateralism and international cooperation to address global challenges.

The event, the press release concludes, was an opportunity to be informed and exchange views on recent developments in China and the prospects for strengthening cooperation between China and Cyprus.
