The deployment of Greek naval and air assets to Cyprus, combined with France’s decision to redirect its flagship aircraft carrier to the Eastern Mediterranean, underscores the rapidly shifting security landscape in the region.
Athens has dispatched the frigates Kimon and Psara, along with a pair of F-16 fighter jets, in a move that strengthens Cyprus’ air defence and counter-drone posture following the second drone incident targeting the British Bases in Akrotiri.
The presence of Psara is considered particularly significant, as it is equipped with the Greek-developed “Centaur” electronic warfare system designed to detect and neutralise unmanned aerial threats. Its capabilities operate in tandem with the area air-defence systems onboard Kimon, while the F-16s provide aerial coverage and rapid response capacity. Together, the assets create a layered defensive configuration aimed at deterring further incursions and reinforcing operational readiness.

Against this backdrop, Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas announced that he will meet on Tuesday with Greek Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias and the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, General Dimitrios Choupis. In a post on X, Mr Palmas said the meeting will focus on “a general review of the data and an assessment of the security situation, as well as consideration of all appropriate measures, with the aim of ensuring an effective response to any eventuality and the protection and safety of our citizens.”
The developments come as France confirmed that its aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle has been ordered to suspend its mission in the Baltic Sea and proceed to the Eastern Mediterranean. The move follows escalating US–Israeli strikes on Iran and Tehran’s attempts to target positions in neighbouring states.

Carrying Rafale fighter jets and regarded as the flagship of the French Navy, the redeployment of Charles de Gaulle is widely interpreted as a signal that military tensions in the Middle East may intensify in the coming period.
