Ankara is again abuzz with speculation about a potential reshuffle in President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s cabinet, with reports circulating in Turkish media about changes involving some of the country’s most senior ministers. The rumours have attracted attention among diplomats in Ankara and come at a time when the government faces mounting political and economic pressures.
According to reporting by journalist Deniz Zeyrek, based on information from colleague Ugur Ergan, a scenario of chain changes is being discussed. One minister is said to be stepping down, another may be reassigned to a different portfolio, and a former minister could return to government.
The scenario places Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya at the centre of the rumours, with claims that he may leave his post. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is reported as a potential successor at the Interior Ministry, while former foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu is said to be a possible returnee to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
There is also discussion around Environment Minister Murat Kurum, who is reportedly being considered for a possible vice-presidential role. Kurum is a close ally of Erdogan and a prominent figure within the ruling AKP, which adds weight to the speculation.
Despite this, Zeyrek has urged caution. He notes that an imminent reshuffle is not expected and describes Yerlikaya, Fidan, Defence Minister Yasar Guler and Kurum as among the most “immovable” figures in the cabinet. His assessment echoes commentary in other Turkish outlets, including Sözcü and Cumhuriyet, where analysts argue that while the political climate may favour adjustments at the top of the bureaucracy, a sweeping cabinet overhaul remains unlikely.
