Nikos Christodoulides elected President of Cyprus

Nikos Christodoulides was elected President of the Republic of Cyprus in the second round of the presidential elections on February 12, 2023, receiving 51.91% of the vote, defeating Andreas Mavroyiannis, who received 48.09%.

2012

Eleftheria Square

Renovation works resume. After lengthy discussions about the design of Eleftheria Square, reconstruction began again on February 13, 2012. New timelines planned completion of the bridge in early February 2013 and the full delivery of the square in February 2014.

2007

Holy Synod

Increases the number of metropolitan dioceses. During its session on February 12, 2007, the Holy Synod decided to create four new metropolitan dioceses and upgrade two archdioceses to metropolises.

1999

Politis Newspaper

A new voice in the media. The daily Cypriot newspaper Politis was published on February 12, 1999, with publisher businessman Yiannis Papadopoulos, introducing revolutionary changes in the Cypriot press.

1982

Committee on Missing Persons

A new phase begins. On February 12, 1982, a new round of work started for the Committee on Missing Persons. The Greek Cypriot side fully accepted the proposals of Claude Piguet and invited the Turkish Cypriot side to do the same, allowing the committee to proceed with its work.

1950

European Broadcasting Union

Founded in Geneva. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) was founded in Geneva on February 12, 1950.

1928

Anorthosis Sports Club

Begins athletic activities. The club Anorthosis started its sports activities on February 12, 1928, with its first football match between P.O.E.B. and a team from Larnaca.

1908

The Anglo-Cypriot

New English-language newspaper. The English-language newspaper The Anglo-Cypriot began circulation in Nicosia on February 12, 1908. Publisher and director was the Englishman Argyll Saxby. It was the only Cypriot newspaper published in English at the time.

1570

Nikolaos Donato

Attempts a sortie from besieged Famagusta. On February 12, 1570, the Venetian captain Nikolaos Donato attempted, with his crew, a sortie from Famagusta, which was under siege by the Ottomans.
