Wildlife Crimes Exposed: Skulls, Traps, and 1,008 Birds in Police Raids

Game and Fauna Service and Cyprus Police conduct large-scale searches of homes and premises in Nicosia and Limassol districts; five people reported and extensive evidence seized.

The Game and Fauna Service, in cooperation with the Cyprus Police, carried out a wide-ranging operation targeting poaching and the illegal possession of wild animals. Searches were conducted at specific homes and premises under seven court warrants, five in Nicosia district and two in Limassol.

Coordinated operation

During the raids, five individuals were reported and a substantial quantity of evidence was located and confiscated. Items include two agrino (Cyprus mouflon) skulls, three dead hares, seven dead partridges, five dead francolins, and 1,008 dead wild birds. Officers also seized four hunting guns, one of which had been modified, forty-seven metal bird traps, two live hares, three live wild birds, one trapping net, a quantity of prohibited cartridges, and three electronic bird-calling devices.

The Game and Fauna Service said investigations are ongoing. The seized items will undergo further examination as part of the ensuing criminal procedures.
