A 43-year-old man was remanded in custody for eight days by the Limassol District Court in connection with shots fired on October 7 against the offices of a construction company. According to police, the case is linked to a previous bombing attack on the same company’s premises on July 3, 2025.
The suspect denies any involvement, claiming he was at home that night and never left. He consented to police obtaining footage from his home’s CCTV system, which was examined by Limassol CID, and insisted that statements be taken from his partner and parents, who live in the same building.
The suspect’s lawyers, Victor Akam and Grigoria Orthodoxia, objected to the police request for remand, arguing that there was no concrete evidence implicating their client and that the case relied solely on the complainant’s allegations. During cross-examination, Akam challenged the quality of the police investigation, describing the complainant’s claims as “coffee-shop gossip.” He further questioned whether the complainant had ongoing disputes with other individuals, to which the investigator replied only for this specific case. The defence suggested that the businessman has conflicts with “many people across Cyprus.”
In granting the remand, the judge said it was deemed necessary given the background of financial disputes between the suspect and the complainant.
Loan-sharking and threats
According to evidence heard in court, the complainant – a businessman – expressed specific suspicions about the suspect, with whom he has a long-standing feud. He claimed that between 2021 and 2022 he borrowed €400,000 from the 43-year-old, with an agreement to repay the amount by 31 December 2023 together with €1 million in interest. The businessman said he repaid the €400,000 and an additional €200,000, but in April 2024 the suspect demanded further interest on the remaining €800,000 – a demand he refused.
The two men reportedly have other pending cases, including one before the Nicosia District Court concerning an alleged assault on 29 December 2023, just two days before the loan’s repayment deadline. Following a complaint at the time, the 43-year-old was arrested and the case was filed for trial.
In his latest statement, the complainant also said that on 22 September 2025 he was approached in Nicosia by a man, who is known to the authorities, claiming that the suspect feared the businessman intended to kill him. He further alleged that on 7 October, the day of the shooting, he was told the suspect had bragged about “sending people” to carry out the attack against him.
