French President Emmanuel Macron will pay an official visit to Cyprus on Thursday, marking the first official bilateral visit by a President of the French Republic since the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus. The visit was announced in a written statement by Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis.

According to the statement, the visit reflects the strong level of relations between the two countries and follows the signing in December 2025 in Paris of an upgraded Strategic Partnership and an Action Plan for 2026–2030.

Historic visit

Letymbiotis said Macron’s visit constitutes a milestone in relations between Cyprus and France and confirms the strategic partnership between the two countries.

He noted that this is the second time the French President has travelled to Cyprus within just 45 days, describing this as an indication of the strategic closeness and shared positions between the two countries.

The spokesperson added that bilateral relations are currently at their highest level following the signing of the upgraded partnership framework and the new action plan covering cooperation across multiple sectors.

Agenda of talks

During the visit, President Nikos Christodoulides and President Macron will hold a private meeting at the Presidential Palace, followed by expanded talks between the delegations of the two countries.

According to the government spokesperson, discussions are expected to focus on:

  • The implementation of the Strategic Partnership
  • Further cooperation in energy, defence, and regional security
  • Issues related to the European agenda
  • Coordination within the framework of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union

Defence and EU cooperation

Letymbiotis stated that cooperation in defence and security remains a central pillar of relations between Cyprus and France.

France is described as one of the most important and reliable partners of the Republic of Cyprus, both at bilateral level and within the European Union.

In this context, Nicosia attaches particular importance to strengthening the EU mutual assistance clause under Article 42.7, which it views as a key pillar for the Union’s strategic autonomy.

Cyprus issue briefing

President Christodoulides is also expected to brief Macron on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue and on the efforts being undertaken by the United Nations Secretary-General.

France, according to the spokesperson, continues to support efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem on the basis of the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.

After the conclusion of the talks, the two presidents will make statements to the media and will then visit the Franco-Cypriot School, a gesture intended to highlight the strong ties between the two peoples.
