US President Donald Trump has nominated John Breslow of Arizona to be the next US Ambassador to Cyprus.
According to the White House, Trump sent several key nominations to the US Senate for confirmation on Tuesday, including a political appointee for Cyprus.
Breslow’s nomination will now be reviewed by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which may or may not hold a committee hearing, before a majority vote will be required in the Senate to confirm his nomination. There is no specific timeframe for the vetting and confirmation process.
Breslow is a businessman and philanthropist, formerly Nebraska State Auditor (1991–1999), who later settled in Arizona. He made his fortune with the family welding-supply firm Linweld, and became a minority owner of the US National Hockey League’s Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes.
He’s funded major projects including a $7 million gift for the John Breslow Ice Hockey Centre at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and $2 million to the Arizona Animal Welfare League (in honor of his wife, Sonia). He is also a donor to Republican causes.
If confirmed by the Senate, Breslow will replace Ambassador Julie S. Davis, a career diplomat who arrived on the island in February 2023. Her tenure has been marked by a significant improvement in US-Cyprus relations and regional collaboration.
In May this year, while still accredited in Cyprus, Davis was assigned to the US Embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine, as Chargé d’ Affaires.
