Hamas said on Wednesday that it remains committed to the ceasefire in Gaza. A spokesperson made the remarks after meetings with Turkish government officials in Gaza and accused Israel of “repeated violations” of the truce. The statement did not address the recent threats issued by U.S. President Donald Trump or by Vice President J. D. Vance.
Competing claims over deadly incident
On Sunday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said militants in Gaza carried out an attack that killed two soldiers and blamed Hamas for breaching the agreement. Hamas countered that the incident occurred in territory under Israeli control and did not constitute a violation of the ceasefire terms as it interprets them.
U.S. pressure on Hamas
On Tuesday, U.S. Vice President J. D. Vance said the ceasefire was progressing better than expected but warned that Hamas would be destroyed if it failed to cooperate, echoing President Trump’s threat of a “quick, fierce and violent” intervention.
